Overview
The 10-day Northern Circuit Route is the longest and most comprehensive itinerary on Mount Kilimanjaro, offering the best acclimatization profile and highest summit success rate of all routes. Approaching from the remote western side via the Lemosho trail, this route circles the mountain clockwise, traversing rarely visited northern slopes with spectacular scenery and minimal crowds.
This extended trek allows for slow, steady altitude gain and multiple acclimatization opportunities, giving your body ample time to adjust to high elevation. Trekkers experience Kilimanjaro’s full range of ecosystems—from lush rainforest and rolling moorlands to stark alpine desert and glacial summit zones while enjoying panoramic views toward Kenya and the Amboseli Plains.
Led by expert Kilimanjaro Mavens mountain guides and supported by a professional team of porters and chefs, the Northern Circuit prioritizes safety, comfort, and a rewarding trekking experience. For climbers seeking the most scenic, least crowded, and most successful route to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), this is the ultimate Kilimanjaro adventure.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be met by a Kilimanjaro Mavens representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. In the afternoon, your lead guide conducts a comprehensive pre-trek briefing covering safety, altitude awareness, the Pole Pole pace, and a full gear check. Missing equipment can be rented locally. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Elevation: 2,100m to 2,650m | Distance: 18km | Time: 5–7 hours
After completing park registration at Lemosho Gate, the trek begins through dense montane rainforest. The trail ascends gently beneath tall trees draped in moss, with opportunities to spot blue monkeys and colobus monkeys. You arrive at Mti Mkubwa (Big Tree) Camp, surrounded by lush forest and cool mountain air.
Elevation: 2,650m to 3,610m | Distance: 8km | Time: 5–6 hours
Leaving the rainforest behind, the forest thins as you climb steadily into the heather and moorland zone. Giant heathers and volcanic rock replace tall trees as the landscape opens up. The trail gradually ascends onto the western edge of the Shira Plateau, offering your first expansive views of Kibo Peak before arriving at Shira 1 Camp.
Elevation: 3,610m to 3,850m | Distance: 7km | Time: 4–5 hours
A relaxed acclimatization day across the broad Shira Plateau. The terrain is mostly flat with gentle undulations, allowing your body to adjust to altitude. Panoramic views stretch toward Mount Meru and across ancient volcanic plains before reaching Shira 2 Camp, located near a seasonal stream.
Elevation: 3,850m to 4,200m | Distance: 11km | Time: 5–7 hours
Leaving the main trail, you head north across remote alpine terrain toward Moir Hut. The landscape becomes rockier and more rugged, with minimal vegetation. This quiet and less-traveled section of the mountain provides excellent acclimatization and a strong sense of wilderness.
Elevation: 4,200m to 4,020m | Distance: 12km | Time: 5–7 hours
The trail continues around Kilimanjaro’s rarely visited northern slopes. Gentle ascents and descents aid acclimatization while offering wide, open views toward Kenya and the Amboseli Plains. You arrive at the remote Buffalo Camp, one of the most scenic and least crowded camps on the mountain.
Elevation: 4,020m to 3,870m | Distance: 8km | Time: 4–5 hours
Today’s hike traverses high alpine desert beneath Kibo’s northern face. The terrain is stark and dramatic, with sweeping horizons and minimal vegetation. The gradual pace helps your body adapt as you reach Third Cave Camp, another quiet and well-positioned acclimatization stop.
Elevation: 3,870m to 4,800m | Distance: 5km | Time: 4–5 hours
The ascent becomes more noticeable as you climb steadily toward School Hut, your final base camp before the summit. The environment is now fully alpine desert, with colder temperatures and thinner air. After an early dinner, you rest and prepare for the summit push.
Elevation: 4,800m to 5,895m to 5,750m | Distance: 10km | Time: 8–10 hours
The summit ascent begins around midnight, climbing steadily to Gilman’s Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you descend slightly to Crater Camp, located inside Kilimanjaro’s volcanic crater near the glaciers, offering a rare and unforgettable high-altitude overnight experience.
Elevation: 5,750m to 3,100m | Distance: 15km | Time: 6–8 hours
After breakfast at Crater Camp, descend past Stella Point and Barafu Camp. The trail continues down into the moorland and then rainforest zones, with increasing oxygen levels and warmer temperatures. You reach Mweka Camp for your final night on the mountain.
Elevation: 3,100m to 1,800m | Distance: 10km | Time: 3–4 hours
The final descent takes you through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. Here, you receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificates before transferring back to Moshi for a hot shower, rest, and celebration.
Depending on your flight schedule, Kilimanjaro Mavens will transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). If you are continuing with a safari or Zanzibar beach holiday, seamless onward arrangements can be made. Your journey concludes with unforgettable memories from Africa’s highest peak.
