Your adventure begins with an early 6:00am pick-up from your hotel in Arusha. From Arusha, you will enjoy a scenic drive of approximately 120 km to Marangu Gate, the main entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park on the south-eastern side of the mountain. The journey normally takes around 2.5–3 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.
Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, your guide will assist with park registration and prepare you for the hike. Your Kilimanjaro adventure then begins along the famous Marangu Route, following a beautiful trail through the lush montane rainforest.
The trek from Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut covers approximately 8 km one way, making a total hiking distance of approximately 16 km round trip. The ascent typically takes around 3–4 hours, while the descent usually takes approximately 2–3 hours, depending on your pace and time spent enjoying the trail. Mandara Hut sits at approximately 2,700–2,720 metres above sea level.
As you hike through Kilimanjaro’s rainforest, you will be surrounded by towering trees, lush vegetation and unique mountain flora. With some luck, you may spot colourful birds, blue monkeys and black-and-white colobus monkeys.
Upon reaching Mandara Hut, you will have time to relax, enjoy your packed lunch and experience the peaceful atmosphere of Mount Kilimanjaro. Depending on time and weather conditions, you may also visit nearby Maundi Crater, which can offer spectacular views of the mountain and surrounding landscapes on a clear day.
After your time at Mandara Hut, you will descend along the same scenic rainforest trail back to Marangu Gate.
